As someone who grew up with Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, I have never been interested in being too involved with social media. I will admit Instagram is the only form of social media that I partake in as it is a great way to keep in touch with others, and make new connections. I never found Twitter to be interesting nor beneficial, especially for my specific field of work. Out of all social media outlets, Twitter seems to be the least professional outlet to use for business. When I think of Twitter, I mainly think of it as a digital diary, where people share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas on. Although Instagram and Facebook can be used as the same thing I believe they are more curated in the business aspect of digital media and marketing.

The digital divide is the unequal access to digital technology, such as smart, phones, laptops, and the Internet. In today’s day and age the use of technology in classrooms are ever more present. However, with the digital divide not everyone has access to these resources. This can affect one’s education, especially when technology is used daily to do many tasks such as homework, in class assignments and research. In my classroom, I know I will experience students who will not have access to technology, and I fear that they will fall behind. One thing that I would try to do is to find resources available to that student and I would also allow them time with in the classroom to have access to the internet if needed. I would also talk to the administration to see if the student can rent out an electronic computer or tablet. I know that some of these things are not affordable to many, but as technology becomes mandatory within our education schools will ultimately have to provide access to those who can’t afford it.

Two software tools I would implement in my classroom would be padlet and parlay. Padlet was a program used when I was in teaching diverse populations (EDF2085), and my professor had used it as what she called the “Parking Lot”. Basically she and the students would add things like resources, events and important information to share with everybody in the classroom. It was like a community bulletin board that anyone can add and share whatever they liked. Parlay is a tool for teaching that can be used to facilitate student lead discussions. I believe that students learn the best when they are the ones modeling teaching, and it also helps other students communicate their ideas and their understanding of what they are learning. Lastly it’s  a good way for students to participate with one another and teach other students.
